About this property

Welcome to Colonial Inn

Colonial Inn is housed in a Victorian-style building with a wraparound porch, located at 305 Main St in Big Indian, New York. The inn offers a homey, antiquated atmosphere featuring numerous historical objects and decor that reflect its long history dating back to 1790. Guests can expect modest, comfortable rooms where original wood floors creak, providing a sense of authenticity rather than modern luxury.

The property includes a cozy restaurant and bar serving a variety of drinks, with a reputation for friendly hospitality from the owners and staff. Breakfast is provided free of charge each morning, with offerings such as French toast and bacon highlighted by previous visitors. While the inn does not have a pool or fitness center, it does provide free Wi-Fi, parking, and is both pet- and kid-friendly, catering well to relaxed, informal stays.

Situated about a mile from Belleayre Beach and three miles from Belleayre Mountain Ski Area, the inn serves as a practical base for exploring outdoor activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and hiking nearby peaks like Panther Mountain and Balsam Mountain. The surrounding wooded mountains contribute to a peaceful rural setting that appeals to guests looking for an escape from busy urban life.

Guest feedback often highlights the warm, welcoming service and unique character of the inn, describing it as a nostalgic retreat with quirks and antiques that may not suit those expecting contemporary accommodations. Some note that the rooms could benefit from updates, but overall, the Colonial Inn is recommended for travelers seeking a down-to-earth experience with a sense of local history and charm.

A must stop on your Catskills trip! The most amazing service I’ve ever experienced. Heather and Steve were so generous! Pool, darts and the friendliest crowd! We also loved the ‘mini beer’ shots!

Had a great stay at the Colonial Inn! The entire space is like your favorite Great Aunt's house who antiques way too often, puts them everywhere, and is going to make the will and estate splitting a nightmare. Heather and Steve were great hosts and very helpful! We even got a drink on the house. We were also able to spend time with Sweet Pea the bird and Ella the dog. The food was hot and good, the beds comfy, and the water hot. It's a comfy, homey, quirky space that could use some updating but overall a great place to stay!

I went to the colonial inn about 15 years ago on a hunting trip. I continued to go back for 4 years in a row after that. It was the coolest place I ever been!! I then moved and couldn’t get there again until May2,2024 for turkey hunting. The place hasn’t changed much Thank God. Steve the owner his Daughter and son are the nicest people you ever want to meet real down to earth Country folks. Just love this place and will use any excuse to come back!!!

My boyfriend and I stayed here from Friday-Sunday, 6/6 - 6-8. He surprised me with a weekend away and it was just the escape I needed! The hospitality and the kindness of Heather and her father Steve is unmatched and so appreciated. The rooms were comfortable and cozy. The food and breakfast both mornings was delicious. We will definitely be going back soon.

Got caught driving late at night with my elderly parents and wife, we were by Kingston and called some motels and one called super 8 if i remember correctly answered the phone and seemed rude, skipped that place. Called some other and they were booked I decided to look further up North and called the Colonial Inn they had availability for the night. About 3 minute drive from Kingston NY. Got there around 10:30pm and little did I know this place would be full of life upon arriving!! I was expecting a typical inn/motel and wow was I in a for an amazing surprise. When you pull up it seems like its just a big ole’ house and essentially it is, but this has a nice twist, its a 1790 construction turned into god know how many businesses throughout its history, but its currently an inn. I walked in and just the front yard left me mouth opened, relics everywhere, a collection of a gone by era. When you come in, you just get shocked at the amount of old objects that surround you.!! I fell in love with this place and right then and there i KNEW I HAD TO STAY HERE! Met with Heather and shes very accommodating and showed us our rooms. The place has a very nice bar with all liquors served and beer of course. I came back down to just admire the place and there so many things to look at i am sure i missed many objects!! Owner invited me by the bar and this is a hang out spot for locals and everyone, was super friendly, I really loved this place. Everyone was having a drink, laughing cheering and just chatting away. Get this, owner bought me a drink!! The owner Steve in my book is a legend! This man is 82 and still works on the place, cooks and has such a beautiful soul! I would go back just to talk to this man! Turns out we went to the same school but at different eras of course! What an amazing man! God bless him. Oh yes I forgot to describe rooms, the place is very old so if you’re into fancy, corporate style boring motels/hotels please stay away, this place has character! Yes floors creak but people in the 1790s walked them floors! The bed in my room was so comfortable and my room was nice and warm! Showers were hot and did I mention I loved this place? Day after me and family woke up and Steve, owner, cooked us breakfast and can he cook !!! Better breakfast than a corporate restaurant!! This place is a hidden gem, Steve makes the place along with his daughter I do hope customers know how nice it is to stay at a family run business, but here is the thing, this place doesn’t even feel like a business. We felt like Steve asked us to stay over. I hope I have time to go back and stay. The town itself is tiny but very accommodating. Make sure you visit the Mexican restaurant across the street.
